 Recognizing The Sacred Nature
Of Your Profession
by Steve McVey

I’m thinking of entering professional ministry,” a young man said to me. “What do you want to do?” I asked him. “I’m not sure,” he replied, “but I want to do something in ministry full-time. I want God to use my life and don’t see much opportunity for that in my work.”

I didn’t get into a lengthy discussion with him since his remark was casually made in passing. It did remind me again, though, of the deception that so many Christians have fallen for in regard to their work. Like this young man, they think that the routine work on their job isn’t that spiritual, compared to those who are pastors, missionaries, etc.

This common viewpoint is a ploy of the enemy to dilute the effect of Christ expressing His life through the lives of believers. The truth is that your profession, no matter what it may be, it is holy. Whether you are a teacher, a doctor, a clerk, a salesman – it makes no difference. Your work is holy because of who you are.

The word holy means “set apart.” One of the greatest deceptions that has ever slipped into the minds of Christians is the idea that there is a difference between secular and sacred. Everything is sacred to the believer. The word “sacred” comes from the Latin, sacrum, which denotes something which is uncommon because of its intimate association with the Divine.

Christians are those who have become one with God through Jesus Christ. Everything in our lives is intimately associated with Him through our relationship to Him, thus making it sacred. Because Christ lives through you, all that you do becomes sanctified (made holy) because He is the One doing the work through you. Nothing is secular (common) to you because you are uncommon yourself.

The ground where Moses stood beside the burning bush was holy ground because God was there. The utensils used in the temple were holy because they were set apart to be used in service to Him. Your professional career is the context within which you have been placed to express Christ’s life for at least one third of your time each day. Consequently, your work is a holy endeavor.

The Apostle Paul wrote, “Don’t just do what you have to do to get by, but work heartily, as Christ servants doing what God wants you to do” (Ephesians 6:6, The Message). When a pastor preaches or a missionary evangelizes or a seminary professor teaches, each is holy work. However, it is equally as holy when a Christian lawyer tries a case, or a salesman makes a sale or an OTR driver drives his truck. It’s all holy because it has been sanctified by the Christ who indwells you.

So, whatever you do, see it as a ministry to your heavenly Father! In The Practice of the Presence of God, the monk, Brother Lawrence wrote: “The time of business does not with me differ from the time of prayer, and in the noise and clatter of my kitchen, while several persons are at the same time calling for different things, I possess God in as great tranquility as if I were upon my knees at the blessed sacrament.” Whether it is washing dishes or taking communion, it is all holy to the one whose life is Jesus Christ.

Don’t view your work as secular. See it for what it is – a holy expression of Christ’s life within you in the marketplace. To understand your responsibilities this way will elevate them to their rightful place as a vehicle through which you may glorify God.

Update From Africa
Steve McVey

In 1 John 3:18, John wrote, “Let’s not just talk about love; let’s practice real love” (The Message) Never has that verse become more real to me than during our recent trip to Swaziland. Our hearts were stirred by what we personally witnessed. The life expectancy there is 32 years old. Swaziland has the highest incident of HIV-AIDS of any nation in the world, with 42% of the population being infected. Many are children whose parents died from AIDS. There are over 70,000 orphans in Swaziland.

In the months ahead, I will share information with you about joining together to touch lives there in a way that can give a future to those who have no hope apart from an expression of God’s love through human beings like you and me. Check the web site often (www.gracewalk.org) to stay abreast of how God is leading us to act like who we are by not only teaching, but touching lives with the love of Jesus. Will you pray for the people of Swaziland? Will you ask the Lord how He may want to use you personally to make a big difference in a child’s life? None of us can help everybody, but we can help somebody. Together, we will be the face of Christ to people in a small part of the world where they desperately need to see and know His love. I will soon be incontact with you again with details about the specific ways that we can share the love of Jesus with people in more practical ways that we’ve ever done through Grace Walk Ministries. Our plan is to do more than “grace talk.” We want to live the life of Christ by touching the helpless and the hopeless. Will you pray with me about this?

Angry Responses To Happy News
by Steve McVey

It’s the strangest thing how good news causes some people to become angry. One would think that if they learned that God loves them with an absolute and unwavering commitment to them that has nothing to do with how they act, anybody would be thrilled. Not so. Some people actually become agitated at such news. “If you tell people that, you are teaching cheap grace!” I’ve been told. (I usually respond by telling them that it’s even worse than they think and that I don’t teach cheap grace. I teach free grace.)

I’m amazed at the reaction from some people when they hear me say that it isn’t possible to out-sin the grace of God. You’d think that would be the kind of good news that would cause anybody to at least sigh a sigh of great relief if not literally jump up and down with joy. But that often isn’t the case. To the contrary, I’ve been accused of “being soft on sin” and encouraging people to have a careless attitude toward sins in their own lives.

Tell Christians that they are free from religious rules and watch how some people will grimace in pain like they’ve suddenly been struck down with kidney stones. As long and as hard as most of us have tried and yet have failed miserably at living up to the demands of religious rules, you’d think we would all be thrilled to hear this news. To the contrary, some shriek in fear, “You’re giving people a license to sin!”

Grace – it’s scary to the religious mind set. The self-righteous religionist is always afraid of how teaching grace might have the wrong effect on somebody else. Jesus was “full of grace and truth” and He didn’t seem to worry about that sort of thing. In fact, He seemed to go out of His way to offend the hyper-sensitivities of the self righteous religious crowd.

Grace – it just doesn’t fit with what seems fair. It doesn’t seem fair because it isn’t fair. That’s why it’s called grace. Make no mistake about it – many in the modern church would have been angry with Jesus if they had been there and heard Him speak. He didn’t fit the religious mold then and neither does He fit it today. He doesn’t care what the self-righteous think about His bizarre expressions of grace. (Bizarre because grace doesn’t fit the expectations of the religious mind.)

Jesus cares about people. He cares enough that He came to break down the bars of religious oppression. He has come to set the captives free, not only from sin but from ruthless religion too.
